From steamy jungles to dry deserts, this episode delves into the extraordinary and intimate lives of soft skinned amphibians such as marsupial frogs, giant salamanders and newts. David takes viewers through the amphibians’ bizarre life history, which has enabled them to break their ties with the water. Popcorn is provided free. Drinks and other snacks are available for purchase.

    • Interesting Insects from 2:00-2:30 p.m. Thursday, September 7th. Have you ever wondered how insects see?  Education staff will share some fun facts about insects including ways in which they are adapted to viewing the world around them.  There will also be an opportunity to see insect specimens on display in the LEC classroom.

    • Family Fun Day from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 9th. Bring your family and friends to the LEC and help us celebrate Grandparent’s Day!  While here, you will be given the opportunity to observe some of our saltwater residents, many of which live in the shallow waters off Volusia County beaches.  You can also observe and learn more about our native alligators and freshwater fish and meet some of the other resident animal ambassadors.  Program participants can also take home a keepsake photo to remember this special day!

    • Popcorn & a Movie-“The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies” from 2:00-3:30 p.m Sunday, September 17th. Every year, 100 million monarch butterflies set off on an incredible journey across North America. These beautiful creatures fly 2,000 miles to reach their remote destination, a tiny area high in the mountains of Mexico. In this film, NOVA flies along with the monarchs visiting the spectacular locations they call home and revealing some of the dangers they encounter along the way. After the film, create a take home butterfly sun catcher, made from recycled materials. Popcorn is provided free. Drinks and other snacks are available for purchase.

    • Right Plant, Right Place from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 23rd. Would you like to learn more about how to plant a Florida friendly garden?  LEC staff will cover some basic principles you can implement into your landscape.  These gardening tips will show you how you can minimize your garden maintenance, conserve water and lessen your impact on the environment.  After the program, there will be a drawing where one lucky program participant will win a “Waterwise Florida Landscapes” booklet to take home.

    • “Owl Power” from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 24th.  What actually makes owls so special? Using the latest in camera technology, bird trainers Lloyd and Rose Buck and their very special family of owls provide a rare opportunity to learn more about these unique birds. This film gives viewers a brand new look at owls, the real stories behind how they hunt, how their vision and hearing works, and how they fly so silently.  After the film, LEC staff will guide you through a hands-on owl pellet lab where we’ll examine the contents of owl pellets to learn more about what owls eat; we’ll also attempt to reconstruct a prey skeleton! The fee is $5 per owl pellet.
