The Lyonia Environmental Center (LEC) provides visitors with a unique
insight into Volusia County’s fragile ecosystems. The center promotes
an understanding of the county’s natural environment, the heritage it
sustains, and the challenges it faces. Whether you are interested in
assisting with educational programs, developing program content,
creating educational materials or animal care, Lyonia Environmental
Center has a place for you. The following is a list of areas in which
you may volunteer including a short description of each area:
Exhibit Docents:  Provide interpretive information about the different
ecosystems the tanks represent, the animals that reside in them, and the
story of the water’s journey in Volusia County. This role provides a
unique, hands on learning experience with assistance from a volunteer.

Education / Outreach Ambassadors:
Represent the LEC at community festivals, meetings of homeowners
associations, civic associations, schools, and other community groups
while providing information about LEC’s mission, programs, and

Facility Docents:
Greet patrons and provide information about the LEC’s mission,
activities, programs, and Lyonia Preserve. Assist patrons and LEC staff
in the gift shop by bagging merchandise, re-stocking shelves,
maintaining display shelves and cases, and pricing merchandise.

Content / Instructional Developer:
Provide assistance to LEC staff with developing activities and lessons
that focus on water conservation, scrub habitat, native animals, etc.

Animal Husbandry:
Once required training has been completed, volunteer will work with LEC
staff to provide quality animal husbandry to our animal ambassadors.
Duties include preparing diets, maintaining animal habitats, aquarium
maintenance, and handling animals used for education programs.

Lyonia Environmental Center requests a volunteer time commitment of a
minimum of 8 hours a month. Assigned days and times will be agreed upon
between you and the volunteer coordinator.
